“Just Banter”? Think Again.
“Just Banter”? Think Again.
We’ve all heard it in the workplace — comments brushed off as “just banter.” But when that “banter” crosses the line, it can quickly become bullying, harassment, or discrimination — and that’s where both individuals and businesses can get into serious trouble.
What one person finds funny, another may find deeply offensive. With social media, work events, and after-hours gatherings all blurring the lines between personal and professional behaviour, employers need to be crystal clear:
Staff behaviour outside of work can still represent your business.
A careless comment on a WhatsApp group, or inappropriate behaviour at a work night out, can damage your company’s culture and reputation in seconds. In some cases, it can even lead to disciplinary action or legal consequences under the Equality Act 2010 if the behaviour is deemed discriminatory or harassing.
That’s why having a clear Conduct Policy is so important. It sets the tone for how people treat one another — in the office, on-site, online, and off-duty. It also gives managers confidence to intervene early, before “banter” turns into a grievance or tribunal claim.
At Business Strategy Group, we help companies design practical, plain-English policies that protect both staff and brand reputation. Because culture isn’t just what happens inside your business — it’s how your people represent it everywhere they go.
